18. Gego, Dibujo sin papel 85/12 (Drawing without Paper 85/12)

Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt), Dibujo sin papel 85/12 (Drawing without Paper 85/12), 1985. Steel wire, thread, and leader sleeves, 41 × 40 inches

If this spiky wire sculpture by Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) were hanging by my desk, I would enjoy absentmindedly studying it all the time. Using the simplest of materials—it’s just wire connected by bits of scrap metal—she creates the illusion of a drawing, albeit one whose shifting volumes interact with their shadows behind. I like its lightness, and the way the rough outline really looks like pencil marks on paper, and how it’s not perfectly square. There are no right angles in this deceptively simple piece. It’s not immediately apparent what’s going on, and I think that’s the point.
