37. Snoop Dogg, Gin and Juice

Rainey Knudson

Twenty years from now, if not sooner, Snoop Dogg will be the new Dolly Parton, an American icon beloved by all. His brilliantly unlikely collaborations with Martha Stewart, his color commentary at the Olympics, openly sobbing as a coach on the talent show The Voice—he is a legitimate father of West Coast rap who has transcended hip-hop to occupy a unique sphere in our national consciousness. More than anything, he has unrepentant joie de vivre. Snoop is completely, unapologetically himself—the genuine, pot-smoking, gin-swilling article. He doesn’t have to pretend to be anything for anybody else. Just like Dolly.

Snoop Dogg, “Gin and Juice,” performed 2015. Written by Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Harry Wayne Casey, Richard Finch, Steve Arrington, Mark Adams, Ray Turner, Steve Washington & Daniel Webster, 1993.
