51. Tuan Andrew Nguyen, The Offering of a Sentient Cry

In the West, a layperson like myself might think that these are the disembodied hands from an old wooden statue of a Christian saint, or perhaps Christ himself. But these are the hands of Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy and compassion. Each hand has specific associations—the left makes a gesture, called a mudra, for warding off evil, while the right holds a jar for pure water, with the power to alleviate suffering and promote healing. Regardless what religion they spring from, we all recognize blessings when we see them. The human need for grace and benediction is universal.

This work is now on view as part of Living with the Gods: Art, Beliefs, and Peoples, an extraordinary exhibition about our species' commonalities. Not to be missed. Through January 20, 2025.
